Faith? What is that?

For so many years of my life, I used to think that faith was something that you had, or you did not have. In the most innocent and naive way, I thought that the cycles that I would witness my family or friends experience were simply because they did not have faith to overcome. In my own life, I have always asked myself the same question - What is faith? and do I really have faith?

I have learned so much about faith on my journey that I would love to share with you today. We all know the famous scripture that is always referenced when talking about faith. Are you ready for it?

Hebrews 11:1 [KJV] Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Let's dive in! This scripture tells us that faith is a substance. This already debunks my previous thoughts of faith being intangible. In the New Internation Version [NIV] of the bible, it calls faith the "confidence in what we hope for" Faith is not something that lives in the atmosphere, but a substance already in our being that brings us hope.

Faith is the substance that gives you hope, and the evidence that shows you that you that you had faith in a past season. This suggest that your faith can not only be felt, but it can be seen, and at times in our lives, even heard.

Faith, like most things in your walk with God are muscles. Just as we need to work out to obtain strength in our bodies, we also have to strengthen our faith muscles as well. Faith can get stronger or weaker depending on how much work we are willing to do. Let's take a look at how we see faith in these passages:

Exodus 14

Moses and the children of Israel are standing between their past and their promise! Along this journey there have been seasons of good faith and seasons of doubt. Some people started to doubt Moses saying that they would have been better off in slavery than to die in the wilderness.

Clues in the Context:

Faith has Levels

  1. What level of faith are you? How much do you continue to believe even in the midst of the storm? How much do you still believe that God is going to deliver you from your own Egypt (past) and bring you into your promise?

  2. According to Romans 12:3, each of us are given a measure of faith. The more we grow and train our faith, the stronger it will become. Imagine how much easier the next storm will be when you approach it in your new level of faith!

"Faith will bring you places you have never been and will carry you to your next level of purpose!" -PQ

Genesis 22

Abraham hears from God, and he is on the way to sacrifice his son, Isaac. On his way to the mountain that God will eventually show him, he is walking in faith. Abraham is strengthening his faith every step he is taking. Isaac even has faith in his father - not knowing the direction or the end result but trusting in the direction of his father.

Clues in the Context:

Faith comes from Relationship

  • Without Abraham's ability to hear from God, he would have killed his son Isaac. Sometimes we have delayed or even killed certain seasons of promise in our lives because we did not have a strong enough relationship to hear and see the ram in the bush.

Faith is not faith until it is tested

  • In this Christian journey, we are all going to be tested. We are all working out our own salvation in faith. How will we ever know that we truly have faith if it is never tested? We must do our best to strengthen our faith while we are moving forward so that we can please God.

Hebrews 11:6 For without faith, it is impossible to please God.

"Faith is not just believing that God can, but that God will!" -PQ

No matter the circumstance will you believe that He will? Can you still believe that He will part the Red Sea for you? Watch this... can you mature to a place where even if God does not answer the way that you desired, you still trust Him in the middle of it all?

My encouragement for you today is to continue to do the word and look inward to answer these important questions about your faith. I believe in you!

So many people have this question about faith. I used to think that it was this intangible thing that either you had, or you did not. I have learned that FAITH is much more than that!
